About Headline Season 2, Episode 13 :
After a series of new collection essays came out, do you think Doctor Who is already a racist? These collection essays allege that the longtime running BBC fantasy science fiction TV Series is “thunderously racist.†The essay entitled “Doctor Who and Race†is scheduled to be published this July but after the reports came out, it seems like publishing it is to be postponed since it was found out to be accusing the show for treating non-white characters as “second classâ€. It backs up the claim by noting that Doctor Who has never featured a black or Asian Doctor in the title role and it even has a history of using white actors to play ethnic characters, and often portrays primitive people as “Savages.†Many of the contributors of the book believe that the failure to cast a black and Asian doctor demonstrates an integral racism in the series, while others have pointed to the part where the show has included an inappropriately “slapstick†take on Hitler in a 2011 episode. Aside from this fact, an American writer named Amit Gupta even suggested that the fifth Doctor named Peter Davison’s obsession with cricket harks back to the “Racial and class†nostalgia of the British empire and as for Australian academic Lindy Orthia, she concludes that “The biggest elephant in the room is the problem privately nursed by many fans of loving a TV show when it is thunderingly racist." Because of the reports coming out, BBC decided to defend their TV show by pointing to what it calls a “strong track record of diverse casting among both regular and guest cast.†They even specified Freema Agyeman’s arrival as the Time Lord’s first black companion in 2007 and Noel Clarke’s role as Mickey Smith, who appeared on and off over the course of the years.
